Read later apps with AI summaries: what to use in 2026
For heavy readers, Readwise Reader is the most capable read-later app with AI help. GoodLinks is a good one-time-purchase choice on Apple devices, Matter suits people who read newsletters and want an AI co-reader, and Instapaper is the long-running simple option. Pocket is gone. VizKeeper is a newer option for people who save links alongside screenshots, PDFs and documents.
First: what happened to Pocket
Pocket no longer exists. Mozilla announced on May 22, 2025 that it was shutting the service down, pulled it from app stores and stopped new sign-ups that day. Mozilla's support page now says Pocket has shut down, that data export has been disabled, that all user data has been queued for permanent deletion as of November 12, 2025, and that the API was turned off the same day. If you never exported your list, it is not recoverable from Pocket. Premium monthly plans stopped renewing and annual subscribers received prorated refunds, per Mozilla.
How to choose
- What you save: articles only, or also newsletters, PDFs, podcasts, videos and social posts?
- AI help: summaries and questions on the page, and whether they need your own API key.
- Search: can you search inside saved text? Some apps put that behind a subscription.
- Platforms: iPhone only, or also Android and web?
- Pricing model: subscription or one-time purchase.
The options
Readwise Reader
Best for: serious readers who highlight and review. Readwise says Reader saves articles, newsletters, RSS feeds, PDFs, EPUBs, YouTube videos with transcripts and Twitter/X threads, and runs on iOS, Android, web, browser extensions and desktop apps. Its AI assistant, Ghostreader, answers questions, defines terms and simplifies language, and Reader offers AI text-to-speech. Readwise's pricing page listed the full Readwise plan, which includes Reader, at $9.99 a month billed yearly, and Reader alone at $7.99 a month billed yearly, with a 30-day free trial. Limits: the most expensive option here, and designed for people who will use the highlighting workflow.
Matter
Best for: people who follow newsletters and writers. The App Store listing says Matter saves articles, PDFs, YouTube videos and podcast transcripts, offers a free tier with an unlimited library, full-text search and tags, and puts an AI Co-Reader, HD text-to-speech, newsletter syncing and Send to Kindle in Premium. Rated 4.6 out of 5 from about 1,200 ratings. Limits: the listing shows several subscription prices, including Premium annual at $79.99 and other tiers, with repeated product names at different prices, so confirm the current price before subscribing.
GoodLinks
Best for: Apple users who dislike subscriptions. The listing shows $9.99 to buy, with an optional Annual Feature Upgrade at $4.99, iCloud sync without an account, iPhone, iPad and Mac versions, highlights, tags and export to PDF, text or Markdown. Article summarization works with Apple Intelligence on supported devices or with your own API keys for external models, and you can turn it off. Rated 4.7 out of 5 from about 640 ratings. Limits: Apple platforms only, and some AI actions need a very recent iOS release.
Instapaper
Best for: a calm, long-established reading list. The listing describes clean reading view, offline reading, highlights and text-to-speech. Premium was listed at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year and adds full-text search, unlimited highlights and notes, and text-to-speech playlists. Rated 4.6 out of 5 from about 3,500 ratings. Limits: the listing does not describe AI summaries, so it is the choice if you want reading, not AI.

Where VizKeeper fits
VizKeeper is an AI organizer for iPhone and iPad from YOMOO LLC, the publisher of this site. Links are one of the things it keeps. Share a link from Safari or another app and VizKeeper reads the page on your iPhone into a source card with the title, author, site and full text, plus a clean reader page. The Library has a Links filter with Article, Post, Podcast and Video tabs, and search finds words inside what you saved. For long reads it generates key points. Text in Xiaohongshu note images is read on the device. You can also ask a question and get an answer that cites the saved page.
Because the same app also holds screenshots, PDFs, receipts and trips, it suits someone who wants links in the same place as everything else. For a dedicated reading experience with deep highlighting, newsletters and review, Reader or Matter is the stronger tool.
Limits: it is new, and the App Store does not yet have enough ratings for a score. There is no Android, web or Mac app. Free is 100 saves and 10 questions a month; Plus is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan. Card numbers, ID numbers and passwords are never sent to AI, and Keep everything on device sends nothing to AI services, in which case answers come from the saves' own words and are less smart.
Which one should you pick
Pick Readwise Reader if you read and highlight daily and want AI help across formats. Pick GoodLinks if you want to buy once and stay in Apple's ecosystem. Pick Matter for newsletters. Pick Instapaper for a plain reading list. Pick VizKeeper if links are only part of what you want to keep.
